(22 Dec 2016) LEAD IN Population in the Palestinian Territories is set to double to 9.5 million by 2050 according to a UN study. It's predicted the increase will add critical challenges to service providers such as hospitals. STORY-LINE Gaza City, a bustling area where people fill the streets every day. But by 2050 the picture looks set to be even busier according to a recent UN study. It predicts the population in the Palestinian Territories will double to 9.5 million by 2050. In the next 14 years alone it's expected to jump from 4.8 to 6.9 million. It's expected this surge will place enormous pressure on local authorities and service providers. The UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) Palestinian representative Anders Thomsen says the situation is very serious. "It's really a wake-up call for both Palestinian planners, for the international community, but also for Israel. Because even with a very dramatically declining fertility rate the population will grow at a very rapid pace in Palestine, particularly in Gaza. So, long-term viable solutions must be found in order to respond to that situation", he says. UNFPA released the 270-page report titled "Palestine 2030 – Demographic Change: Opportunities for Development" this month. The "long-term viable solutions" referred to by Thomsen include ending the Israeli occupation in the West Bank where about three million Palestinians live under the Palestinian Authority's limited rule, and ending the blockade of the Gaza Strip, the coastal enclave ruled by the militant Hamas group which is home to nearly two million people. Peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians over creating a Palestinian state in Gaza with a capital in East Jerusalem have stalled for years. Other UN studies predict Gaza will become uninhabitable in the next three years. Unemployment is over 40 per cent and 60 per cent among the youth. It also suffers severe electricity outages, untreated water and a poorer health system than in the West Bank. Here at Shifa hospital in Gaza City they are struggling to find enough beds to deal with the increased birth rate. "In Gaza Strip, we have 60,000 births annually, with an average of 170 newborns daily. In Al-Shifa's incubators, which represent 30 per cent of Gaza Strip's births we have 55 birth cases daily. The birthrate is very high compared to the number of beds. We have severe shortages in (hospital) beds in Gaza Strip", explains Allam Hamada, Director of incubators. Despite the lack of resources, the population looks set to keep on increasing, but large families are already struggling. In the Shati refugee camp east of Gaza city, ten members of Al-Adgham family live in a small place that doesn't have room for this number. Um Wael Al-Adgham is the mother of the family and explains: "When my children were fewer (than today) the suffering was less, but when my children increased and the pressure and demand increased, we could not pay for this or that or the home rental fees. We had to move to this bad house despite its rental not being cheap." With families looking set to get even bigger over the coming years, demand on services and pressure on individuals will surely intensify. Residents in the West Bank village of Jaloud have accused a group of Israeli settlers of attacking a school and burning olive trees. Jaloud is situated next to a Jewish settlement outpost, whose residents have clashed with local Palestinians in the past. Israel has also seen recent attacks, mainly on religious sites. Four young Israeli settlers from the West Bank have been arrested in connection with an attack on the Protestant Cemetery of Mount Zion. Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld, said that it was important to keep a grounded perspective on the situation: "This is something that we see as a local incident. It's not organised terrorism, it's certainly not on the level of terrorism. These youths are not walking around armed, not even with knives or anything like that. So we have to put things into proportion." Fouad Twal, Jerusalem's Latin Patriarch agreed, saying that youngsters can be easily corrupted, so preventative measures must be put in place from an early age: "Go to the roots, to the cause, to the school, to the education, for the well-being of all our society in Jerusalem and in Israel," he said. Palestinian Christians took to the streets on October 6, to protest against the attack on the Mount Zion cemetery. The vandalism struck a particularly raw nerve, as some of the damaged graves belonged to key figures from 19th and 20th centuries - important periods in Jerusalem's history. The most notable of the damaged graves belonged to Johann Ludwig Schneller, who founded an orphanage and designed the most advanced printing press in 19th-century Jerusalem. An Israeli soldier is seen shooting an arrested and bound Palestinian in the leg with a plastic bullet, in a video released by an Israeli human rights group on Sunday. B'Tselem's footage shows the Palestinian demonstrator — identified as Ashraf Abu Rahman, 27 — with handcuffs and a blindfold, as a lieutenant colonel holds him by the arm. Abu Rahman was lightly wounded in the incident which took place on July 7 in Nilin, a West Bank village where regular protests are held against Israel's separation barrier by stone-throwing demonstrators, the group said. The army, which says five border guards, three soldiers and two laborers working on the wall were injured during protests in June, announced the launch of an inquiry after the video was shown on Palestinian television. Israel says the barrier is needed to stop potential attackers from infiltrating Israel and Jewish West Bank settlements, but Palestinians say it is a land grab aimed at undermining the viability of their promised state. The International Court of Justice in 2004 issued a non-binding resolution calling for parts of the barrier inside the West Bank to be torn down and for a halt to construction there. Israel has ignored the ruling. (AFP)

There has been a sharp increase in the number of suicides and attempted suicides across the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian territory governed by the group Hamas. In January and February of this year alone, 80 Palestinians living in Gaza have either tried to or have succeeded in taking their own lives, which is nearly a 40-percent rise from previous years. Mental health officials are now warning the situation could get much worse. In the West Bank and Gaza, ordinary movement—to get to work, to a hospital, to school—is restricted, wreaking havoc on the lives of Palestinians who live there. Gisha is an Israeli human rights organization that promotes the right to freedom of movement. They provide legal assistance and engage in public advocacy to try to change policies that restrict freedom of movement but that don't involve legitimate security needs. HEBRON (Ma'an) -- A group of Israeli settlers in Hebron in the occupied West Bank were caught Thursday stealing olives from Palestinian farmland, local activists said. The Palestinian group Youth Against Settlements released the video of settlers at work on the olive trees "in line with the Israeli plan to control Hebron." "Olive season is starting. This means national events will begin soon, and we will work on organizing more national events in Tal Rmaideh to prevent settlers from attacking Palestinian lands. "Palestinians will look after their land and never forget it," said Issa Amro.

With Palestinians protesting across the Southern territory and West Bank on Friday, these extra troops have a mission: blocking people from crossing the border into Israel. Thursday marked a rare respite from the violence until Palestinian rioters set fire to Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus overnight, Israeli and independent media reported. Palestinian Authority security forces dispersed the mob at the compound believed to contain the remains of the Old Testament patriarch Joseph in the West Bank and put out the blaze. But the attack on the Jewish site was a worrying development as Palestinian groups called for protests after Friday prayers. In which John Green teaches you about conflict in Israel and Palestine. This conflict is often cast as a long-term beef going back thousands of years, and rooted in a clash between religions. Well, that's not quite true. What is true is that the conflict is immensely complicated, and just about everyone in the world has an opinion about it. John is going to try to get the facts across in under 13 minutes. The 5th of June 2017 marks 50 years since the beginning of Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian Territory. Israelis and Palestinians now live a reality where, under a single regime, one group is privileged while the other is deprived of its basic human rights. For 50 years, Israel has administered a pervasive system of control over Palestinians in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT), while denying them their right to self-determination and controlling virtually all aspects of their life without giving them any say. This short video gathers four short-movies realised by our members; B'Tselem, Al Haz, Al Mezan and PCHR. It pictures the daily life of Palestinians and the daily human rights violations they face...

The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict The Israeli--Palestinian conflict is the ongoing struggle between Israelis and Palestinians that began in the mid 20th century. The conflict is wide-ranging, and the term is sometimes also used in reference to the earlier sectarian conflict in Mandatory Palestine, between the Zionist yishuv and the Arab population under British rule. The Israeli--Palestinian conflict has formed the core part of the wider Arab--Israeli conflict. Despite the long going peace process and the general reconciliation of Israel with Egypt and Jordan, Israelis and Palestinians have failed to reach a final peace agreement. The remaining key issues are: mutual recognition, borders, security, water rights, control of Jerusalem, Israeli settlements, Palestinian freedom of movement and finding a resolution to the refugee question. The violence resulting from the conflict has prompted international actions, as well as other security and human rights concerns, both within and between both sides, and internationally. Many attempts have been made to broker a two-state solution, involving the creation of an independent Palestinian state alongside an independent Jewish state or next to the State of Israel (after Israel's establishment in 1948). In 2007 a majority of both Israelis and Palestinians, according to a number of polls, preferred the two-state solution over any other solution as a means of resolving the conflict. Moreover, a considerable majority of the Jewish public sees the Palestinians' demand for an independent state as just, and thinks Israel can agree to the establishment of such a state. A majority of Palestinians and Israelis view the West Bank and Gaza Strip as an acceptable location of the hypothetical Palestinian state in a two-state solution. Within Israeli and Palestinian society, the conflict generates a wide variety of views and opinions. This highlights the deep divisions which exist not only between Israelis and Palestinians, but also within each society. A hallmark of the conflict has been the level of violence witnessed for virtually its entire duration. Fighting has been conducted by regular armies, paramilitary groups, terror cells and individuals. Casualties have not been restricted to the military, with a large number of fatalities in civilian population on both sides. The two parties engaged in direct negotiation are the Israeli government, currently led by Benjamin Netanyahu, and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), currently headed by Mahmoud Abbas. The official negotiations are mediated by an international contingent known as the Quartet on the Middle East represented by a special envoy that consists of the United States, Russia, the European Union, and the United Nations. The Arab League is another important actor, which has proposed an alternative peace plan. Egypt, a founding member of the Arab League, has historically been a key participant. Since 2006, the Palestinian side has been fractured by conflict between the two major factions: Fatah, the traditionally dominant party, and its later electoral challenger, Hamas. Following Hamas' seizure of power in the Gaza Strip in June 2007, the territory officially recognized as the State of Palestine (former Palestinian National Authority - the Palestinian interim governing body) is split between Fatah in the West Bank, and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The division of governance between the parties has effectively resulted in the collapse of bipartisan governance of the Palestinian National Authority. A round of peace negotiations began at Annapolis, Maryland, United States, in November 2007. These talks were aimed at having a final resolution by the end of 2008. Direct negotiations between the Israeli government and Palestinian leadership began in September 2010 aimed at reaching an official final status settlement. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli%E2%80%93Palestinian_conflict

Representatives, one carrying assault rifle, arrive for meeting ++Interior shots++ 5. Various shots of representatives meeting inside the PLC STORYLINE: Representatives of Palestinian political groups in Gaza met on Saturday night to discuss how they will respond to the end of Israeli occupation of the area under Ariel Sharon''s plans for a military disengagement from most Palestinian territories. Gaza representatives of Palestinian groups such as Yasser Arafat''s Fatah party, Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) met at the Palestinian Legislative Council offices in Gaza City. Israel''s Prime Minister Ariel Sharon detailed his proposed withdrawal from Gaza and most of the West Bank in interviews with three Israeli newspapers on Friday. The proposals would see the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza starting within a year. The only land Israel would continue to hold there would be a patrol road along the territory''s border with Egypt that the military says is crucial to combat weapons smuggling. In the lead-up to a withdrawal from Gaza, Sharon said he would order a freeze on construction in the coastal strip''s 21 Jewish settlements, all of which would be removed under the plan. Initially, Sharon had considered holding onto three of the enclaves in northern Gaza. The Israeli leader''s Likud Party is to make a final decision on the proposal. Its 200,000 members are divided and will vote in a binding referendum after Sharon returns from an April 14 meeting with US President George W. Bush. An Islamic Jihad representative at the Gaza meeting on Saturday, Khaled el Batesh, indicated his group would wait to see the scale and effect of the Israeli withdrawal from the region before making its position clear.
