SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Voxpop, Sayed Awad: "We're very happy that all the Palestinian children and people will move freely without the worry of clashes with Israeli or rockets landing on them.'' 11. Various of Palestinians at the fence STORYLINE: Joyous Palestinians clambered over the wall dividing the Gaza Strip from Egypt in the desert town of Rafah on Monday. For the first time in years, they could meet relatives from the other side of the border after Israel withdrew its last soldiers from the Gaza Strip. Among those crossing were purported members of the radical Islamic group, Hamas, who waved the militant group's green flag on Egyptian territory, raising immediate concern over Egypt's ability to meet Israeli demands to prevent militants leaving Gaza. Palestinians were dancing and chanting on both sides of the border. "It isn't only my feeling. It's every Palestinian's feeling of happiness," said Nidal Hamad. Sayed Awad, another Palestinian, said he was "very happy that all the Palestinian children and people will move freely without the worry of clashes with Israeli or rockets landing on them". But Egyptian security officials suggested that the free, unchecked crossings would be short-lived as Egypt country deploys 750 heavily armed troops to secure its border with Gaza following the end of Israel's 38-year occupation. Israel has long guarded the high walls splitting Rafah against cross-border infiltrators smuggling weapons and other contraband from Egypt into the volatile Palestinian territory. Within hours of Monday's withdrawal, hooded Hamas militants toting guns stood atop the Palestinian wall as grinning Gazans clambered over using ropes to meet relatives long stranded on the Egyptian side. Residents on the Egyptian side climbed onto rooftops and waved towards the Palestinian side. A group of men and boys danced around a large green Hamas flag in full view of Egyptian security forces, who are also battling Islamic militants responsible for several deadly tourist resort bombings on the Sinai Peninsula. But the dance came to a sudden halt as a celebratory burst of gun fire was shot into the air on the Palestinian side. Several Egyptian security personnel, who declined to be identified for security reasons, said they were treating the crossings as a "humanitarian situation", as many of the people hadn't seen their relatives since the Palestinian uprising began in 2000 or longer. But nobody crossed through the main Rafah border crossing point, which Israel has closed indefinitely. Egypt is trying to negotiate a deal over the crossing and Israel has suggested European monitors could man it. Jordan's deputy premier demanded Israel open Gaza's crossing points, such as Rafah, which is the main gateway for Gaza's 1.3 million Palestinians to the outside world. Palestinian Authority security forces dispersed the mob at the compound believed to contain the remains of the Old Testament patriarch Joseph in the West Bank and put out the blaze. But the attack on the Jewish site was a worrying development as Palestinian groups called for protests after Friday prayers. There has been a sharp increase in the number of suicides and attempted suicides across the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian territory governed by the group Hamas. In January and February of this year alone, 80 Palestinians living in Gaza have either tried to or have succeeded in taking their own lives, which is nearly a 40-percent rise from previous years. Mental health officials are now warning the situation could get much worse. The 5th of June 2017 marks 50 years since the beginning of Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian Territory. Israelis and Palestinians now live a reality where, under a single regime, one group is privileged while the other is deprived of its basic human rights. For 50 years, Israel has administered a pervasive system of control over Palestinians in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT), while denying them their right to self-determination and controlling virtually all aspects of their life without giving them any say. This short video gathers four short-movies realised by our members; B'Tselem, Al Haz, Al Mezan and PCHR. It pictures the daily life of Palestinians and the daily human rights violations they face...

In the West Bank and Gaza, ordinary movement—to get to work, to a hospital, to school—is restricted, wreaking havoc on the lives of Palestinians who live there. Gisha is an Israeli human rights organization that promotes the right to freedom of movement. They provide legal assistance and engage in public advocacy to try to change policies that restrict freedom of movement but that don't involve legitimate security needs. We spoke with Gisha's founder, Sari Bashi. Learn more: http://www.opensocietyfoundations.org/voices/israeli-group-helps-palestinians-find-freedom

In which John Green teaches you about conflict in Israel and Palestine. This conflict is often cast as a long-term beef going back thousands of years, and rooted in a clash between religions. Well, that's not quite true. What is true is that the conflict is immensely complicated, and just about everyone in the world has an opinion about it. John is going to try to get the facts across in under 13 minutes. GAZA, Dec 7 (Reuters) - The powerful Palestinian Islamist group Hamas called on Thursday for a new uprising against Israel after U.S. President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital. “We should call for and we should work on launching an intifada in the face of the Zionist enemy,” Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said in a speech in Gaza. Haniyeh, elected the group’s overall leader in May, urged Palestinians, Muslims and Arabs to hold rallies against the U.S decision on Friday, calling it a “day of rage.” “Let December 8 be the first day of the intifada against the occupier,” he said. Israel and the United States consider Hamas, which has fought three wars with Israel since 2007, a terrorist organization. It does not recognize Israel’s right to exist and its suicide bombings helped spearhead the last intifada, from 2000 to 2005. “We have given instruction to all Hamas members and to all its wings to be fully ready for any new instructions or orders that may be given to confront this strategic danger that threatens Jerusalemand threatens Palestine,” said Haniyeh. “United Jerusalem is Arab and Muslim, and it is the capital of the state of Palestine, all of Palestine,” he said, referring to territory including Israel as well as the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip and the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Haniyeh called on Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to withdraw from peacemaking with Israel and on Arabs to boycott the Trump administration. “It should be announced that the so-called peace agreement was buried, once and for all, and that there is nothing called a partner for the Palestinians in peace,” he said. Trump reversed decades of U.S. policy to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, upsetting the Arab world and Western allies alike.
